Honor Medgar and vote!
Medgar Evers was a World War II veteran who fought in the Battle of Normandy, honorably discharged as a sergeant in the U.S. State Army.
Evers enrolled at Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College, majoring in business administration.
Medgar was on the debate, football, and track teams, sang in the choir, and was junior class president. Medgar earned his Bachelor of Arts in 1952.
Medgar married his classmate at Alcorn, Myrlie Beasley.They had three children, Darrell, Reena and James.
On November 24, 1954, Medgar was named as the NAACP's first field secretary for Mississippi.
Medgar and Myrlie made Mississippi's state capital their home.
Jackson, Mississippi had a large white supremacist population and the Ku Klux Klan were present in it's suburbs.
In the spring of 1963, Medgar Evers was charged with enforcing the voting rights of Negroes in the state of Mississippi.
Medgar Evers lived with the constant death threats.
In the early morning of Wednesday, June 12, 1963, just hours after President John F. Kennedy's nationally televised Civil Rights Address, Medgar returned home after meeting with NAACP lawyers.
As Medgar stepped out of his car onto his carport, he was struck in the back with a bullet fired from an Enfield 1917 rifle. The bullet passed through his heart.
Medgar staggered to his front door where Myrlie found him. She took him to the nearest hospital where Medgar was initially refused entry because he was Black..
After 50 crucial minutes, Medgar was reluctantly admitted but died.
Medgar was 37 years old.
