My Valentines Day Post

It's Valentines Day.....I'm sure you all know all about it...Some of you even dread it...but just in case you didn't know the history of it...Trivia buff that I am..here it is. (You all of course know..that I just needed a reason to post something...anything today right?)

Saint Valentine...Not to be confused with Saint Nick...Okay, seriously now Saint Valentine's Day, commonly shortened to Valentine's Day, is an annual commemoration held on February 14 celebrating love and affection between intimate companions.(Married folk and unmarried folk who are still doing it anyway!)

The day is named after one or more early Christian martyrs, Saint Valentine, and was established by Pope Gelasius I in 496 AD. It was deleted from the Roman calendar of saints in 1969 by Pope Paul VI, but its religious observance is still permitted. It is traditionally a day on which lovers express their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards (known as "valentines"). The day first became associated with romantic love in the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the High Middle Ages, when the tradition of courtly love flourished.

Modern Valentine's Day symbols include the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have given way to mass-produced greeting cards. I'm sure that now with Androids and Blackberrys and texting and social networking...Some other silly custom will take route soon. By soon ,I mean within the next few years...If it hasn't already. Millions of people use, every year, digital means of creating and sending Valentine's Day greeting messages such as e-cards, love coupons or printable greeting cards. An estimated 15 million e-valentines were sent last year...

Kind of cold isn't it? That's commerce for you...The part of me that is not cynical and that is still a hopeless romantic who desperately is looking for the purity in anything says that you and your significant other should go to a movie, go to a special dinner, find a hotel room today to celebrate each other and being together...I am serious...In a world where there isn't a whole lot to celebrate...Love still is real...Love still is...well....what it is!

Peace and Love to you all!
